The last of our interviews, I bring you Pixel Artist API-Beast!

:iconclefairykid:  How did you get started in Pixel Art? Was it your first medium or did you work with something different before discovering it?

:iconapi-beast: My dream was always to make PC games. 7 years ago (at the age of 12) I started to make modifications for the game Clonk, since I needed graphics for those modifications I first learned image manipulation with GIMP and later 3D graphics with Blender. These skills were purely practical at first, though they made me interested in Art more. 2 years ago at the age of 16 I tried pixel-art with the idea in the back of the mind that it could be useful for future game projects (by that time I already became proficient at C++ so the idea of coding my own game wasn't far away). :blahblah:

:iconclefairykid:  What is the thing you love the most about Pixel Art? What makes it stand out from other art mediums for you?

:iconapi-beast: The control you have over it, I can create much more perfectioned art if I have control over every single pixel. It also allows me to look at other peoples and see how certain things are done.

:iconclefairykid: How long have you been working in Pixel Art? Do you feel like it's hard to learn or somewhere in between?

:iconapi-beast:  It's not easy but definitely a lot easier than painting or drawing. The difference is that in pixel art you work with pixels (wohoo!) which are very defined, you have control over every single one. In drawing you make a line and either it is perfect or not, if it is not you have to redo the line until it is perfect, on the contrary in pixel art you can draw one line and then "perfectionize" it afterwards. You can make up lacking skill with time making the whole learning process less frustrating. :yum:

:iconclefairykid:  What is one of your favourite pixel artworks that inspires you? Can you  explain what makes it so inspirational?

:iconapi-beast: None really... There are some truly epic works out there, but I know "Hey, these are so truly epic because their creator didn't just put a few hours into it, but a few months". :boo: For my own art digital painters are usually more of a inspiration than pixel artists.

:iconclefairykid: Who are your favourite Pixel Artists? What is it you like about them?

:iconapi-beast: Drazelic (Not active on dA: www.pixeljoint.com/p/23746.htm ), he is insanely effective in making really awesome Wesnoth (www.wesnoth.org/) unit sprites.
St0ven (st0ven.deviantart.com/), I had contact with him quite often already and he is just brilliant, has always the best advise when it comes to pixel art or just art in general.
Slym (Not active on dA: www.pixeljoint.com/p/19763.htm ), very effective style, looks pretty awesome anyway.

:iconclefairykid:  Are there any myths in Pixel Art that you've come across? Things that you thought were myths but turned out to be true?

:iconapi-beast: None ^^;

:iconclefairykid:  Do you think that Pixel Art is a respected medium in it's own right? Why and why not?

:iconapi-beast: No. Unlike other mediums there is a lacking sense of quality in the audience, people either go "meh, I don't like Pixel-Art" or like everything regardless of their quality. There are quite a few groups who "like" pixel art, but only the pixel artists themselves and a few individuals seem to really appreciate well-done pixel art. That needs to change. :shakefish:

:iconclefairykid:  What advice would you give to those who are interested in starting out in Pixel Art?

:iconapi-beast: Learn it actively, always look at what you can improve, what needs practice etc.

:iconclefairykid:  Share your proudest pixel piece with us! What makes you so proud of it in particular?

:iconapi-beast: Hard to say...
How about some of the sprites I made recently? :deviation:
Summoners Handbook #9: Blade Spider by API-Beast Summoners Handbook #5: Spectral Guard by API-Beast
They are just pretty cool and for me they show how efficient I've become in PA.

:iconclefairykid:  What are your goals in Pixel Art? Is it just for fun or do you aim to master particular styles or techniques? Any last words about Pixel Art in general?

:iconapi-beast: I just want to become better :)

:iconclefairykid:
